Exit Summer

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end

Exit Summer

Hello friends,

Today marks the end of Michaela’s third full week of school, which started on August 23rd. We kicked it off with that age-old tradition: back-to-school shopping. It’s fun to see her develop her own sense of style, which she describes as a combination of Wednesday Addams and Pompompurin.

Here and below: pages from my comic diary.

The weather has been mild, for which I am beyond grateful. But the first day of school was blisteringly hot. Which made it difficult to enjoy the jazz band hired for the occasion. They played “When the Saints Go Marching In” while leading a parade of students into the schoolyard.

The past few weeks have been all about adjusting to new routines. At least we were able to sneak in one swim in Lake Michigan. And we closed out Labor Day with a final swim at the local pool. I used to feel kind of sad when summer ended. But I’m excited about fall, which seems to be flying by already. I’m trying to savor it as much as I can.

Note: They played “Closing Time” by Semisonic, not by Tom Waits (which is one of my all-time favorites).

Love,

Claire
