Work Dream
Or was it a nightmare?
Dear Friends,
One of these days I’ll make a comic about the weird jobs I’ve had. Stamping words on rubber bands. Packing film props from Fantastic Mr. Fox. Doing inventory at a Japanese basket-making shop. Buying snacks for an internet start-up.
But the reality is that I have been desk bound for most of my professional life. There are few jobs I “return” to in my dreams, and for whatever reason, Artforum is one of those jobs. I was an associate editor (I think that was my title? This was around 2004) and the hours were brutal. It was common to stay until midnight when the magazine was about to go to press, and to work on weekends. I remember wondering how my coworkers managed to get their laundry done. The nights we worked late the publishers would buy us dinner and I think I consumed more pad Thai during the year I worked there than I have at any other point in my life.
I hope all who celebrate have a lovely Thanksgiving next week! Chad is committed to making a pecan pie. Michaela says her pie will be pumpkin. What kind of pie will you make? Temperatures here are supposed to drop, which is normal for this time of year (unlike the 65 degree weather we’ve been having) and frankly I’m looking forward to it. Bring on the sweaters and the hot chocolate.
Love,
Claire
